The calving process (which is the birth of the male or female calves) represents the beginning of the cattle production system. Analyzing these data enables us to understand which regions of the state are more dedicated to this early production stage (despite of the fact that all cities report births); estimate the herd numbers for the next productive cycle and potentially estimate annual herd growth. The increase in calf numbers rates may demonstrate an improvement on the herd’s natality rates or higher cow retention rates, resulting on an increase in the numbers of breeding cows.
Beef cattle producers inform their calving numbers to the state government, at least once a year, through the local City Animal and Plant Health Offices.
This data originates from the Animal and Plant Health Surveillance System controlled by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of Rio Grande do Sul State.
